1889 | Start of a tatami business, alongside agricultural activity, in the house of the current president, Minato district in Ishinomaki. |

1968 | Creation of the Sasaki Sangyo limited liability company (LLC) and construction of a factory in the Sue district of Ishinomaki. |
1993 | Construction of a new house serving as an office and a new tatami showroom in the Minato district of Ishinomaki. Appointment of Mr. Shoestsu Sasaki as CEO. |
1997 | Factory expansion and introduction of a fully automatic sewing line for tatami production. |
1999 | The design of a healthy tatami mat made from high-quality charcoal received the Miyagi Manufacturing Award. Patent filing. |
2000 | Organization modified to become Waraku Co., Ltd. Opening of the Sendai office. |
2003 | Obtention of a prefectural construction permit (for interior design work). |

Waraku is registered as an SDG partner of Ishinomaki. We aim to work with Ishinomaki City to raise awareness of the SDGs, promote the dissemination of their philosophy, and further promote efforts to achieve them.
President profile
Waraku Co., Ltd. Mr. Shoetsu Sasaki, President
Mr. Sasaki was born in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Pref. in 1951. After graduating from college, he worked for three years at a local steel company before joining the family business, Sasaki Sangyo, manufacturing tatami mats and hard tatami mattresses.
In 1993 he became CEO and in 2000 the organization became Waraku Co., Ltd.
Since then, he has designed a number of unique rice straw tatami products.
In 2006, he became president of the Miyagi Prefecture Tatami Manufacturers Association, and for 12 years he worked to promote rice straw tatami mats and develop a sense of coexistence among members of the association
Between 2007 and September 2021, he was the general director of the National Tatami Manufacturers Association, which brings together rice straw tatami manufacturers across the country.
In September 2020, he gave a lecture on “Rice straw from the perspective of tatami makers” at the special exhibition “Straw and Life” at the Sendai History and Folklore Museum.
